Shirley June (Willaman) Sauder, wife of Roger Edward Sauder for over 70 years passed away on April 11, 2019. She is survived by two daughters, Susan Decker (husband Dr. Jeffrey Decker) and Sherry Rees. She leaves behind four grandchildren, Breigh Decker McCall, Erika Decker Wykes-Sneyd, Jessica Decker Retrum and Matthew Rees. She was great-grandmother to five. She is also survived by sister Nancy Willaman Johnson and brother Arvine Charles Willaman Jr. Shirley was a resident of The Summit at Sunland Springs in Mesa, AZ.
Shirley and Roger started their lifelong love story when they first met in grade school, in Ohio. Roger wrote love notes to Shirley in fifth grade and she was his only first date. It was interrupted when Roger left high school early to serve in the United States Navy during World War II. Following the war, Roger returned to the love of his life and married her June 27, 1948. Shirley raised their daughters and worked in the school libraries of Sauder Junior High School and then at Kent State University Stark Campus.
They retired at 60 to Punta Gorda, Florida where they enjoyed designing and building their Punta Gorda home. They lived happily in Florida for 18 years. They weathered two back-to-back hurricanes leading Shirley to decide it was time to move closer to their daughters, first heading to Ohio and then to Arizona.
Shirley shared Roger’s love for The Ohio State Football team and they had season tickets on the 30-yard line. There are no better Buckeye fans then the Sauders. They enjoyed traveling within the United States and abroad, often doing so with a group of close college friends.
During the last two weeks of Shirley’s life, her extended family members traveled from near and far to say their farewells. Shirley passed resting quietly surrounded by her two daughters and her loving husband. Blessed is the name of the Lord.
