Franklin Eugene Smallwood (Gene) – A most genuine man who appreciated nature and lived life to the fullest. Born on August 12, 1937, in Manchester, Kentucky, and made his way west to Arizona as a child with his mother and brothers who sought a better life for their family.  Their family grew after his mother married Lloyd Tucker and had two more children, Pamela and Ron Tucker. Gene graduated from Buckeye Union Highschool in 1955 where he met his wife, Patricia Walmsley. He attended Arizona State University where he studied Engineering and worked for Del Webb in Sun City for over 20 years. His favorite hobbies included wood working, fishing along the Black River, and hiking in the Superstition Mountains. Gene left his mark in craftsmanship throughout the valley.
Gene is survived by his wife, Patricia Smallwood, children, Stacy Simon (Bruce) and Matthew Smallwood (Denise), siblings, Pamela Tucker, Ron Tucker, and five grandchildren, Talia Simon, Tyler Smallwood (USN) Ellie Simon, Trevor Smallwood, and Miya Smallwood. His family greatly admired him, and love and miss him dearly. Preceded in death by mother Shirley, father Elmer, step-father Lloyd Tucker, and bothers Gary and James. In lieu of flowers please send donations to Hospice of the Valley, who was there in his time of need

Stacy (& Bruce), it was a pleasure to have met and interacted with your dad. He was the definition of what people mean by “salt of the earth” kind of men.

We will certainly miss Gene at our monthly “Brunch Bunch” meetings and his funny stories! I will miss sending him birthday cards on August 12, as that was my brother, Jack’s birthday as well, and he and Gene were roommates at ASU. Bet they are having a great reunion Up There!

I grew up in Buckeye, & have so many wonderful memories of the Smallwood boys. My late brother Wesley (Tiger) Stephens was very close to both Gene & Jimmy. I was younger, so those guys were the ones I looked up to. Gene & Pat invited me to lunch less than two years ago, so that will remain my last memory of Gene. His was a life well lived, & I am honored to have known him.
