Wayne was born November 20, 1933 in Superior, Wisconsin to Sylvia and Edward Converse. He was baptized on May 16, 1935 in Wisconsin. Through the age of 12, he grew up in Wisconsin, with 1 sister and 3 brothers. His family then moved to Washington in 1947. After completing high school he worked on fishing boats as a cook.

At the age of 18 he joined the United States Air Force where he proudly served his country for 21 years. He met his wife Dorothy in 1954 in Tempe, Arizona. They were married September 4, 1954 and celebrated 66 years together in 2020. Wayne and Dorothy were confirmed together on June 17, 1957 at Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Tempe, Arizona. During Wayne’s years in the Air Force they lived in Oregon, Idaho, Texas, Japan, Vietnam, and Arizona. Together they had 4 children, Ron, Debbie, Glenn, and Sandy.

After retiring from the Air Force in 1973 they settled in Tempe, Arizona where they raised their family in the house that was formerly on the Kyrene School District grounds. Wayne worked for Kyrene School District for 20 years as a director in the Department of Grounds, Property and Transportation. He retired from Kyrene in 1994. Through his retirement years he worked odd jobs for John Deere for over 19 years. After this time he was known for his many hobbies including wood working, painting, helping family and friends. He would help build, fix or repair things around their homes. He proudly put up his Christmas light display every year at their home including wood pieces that he made and painted.

Wayne was a faithful servant to our LORD until death, singing his favorite hymn loudly, ”What a Friend We Have in Jesus” the Sunday before his passing. He passed peacefully in his sleep on Monday, May 10, 2021 at the age of 87 years and 6 months old.

He is preceded in death by his parents, siblings, a grandson, II Samuel Salzwedel, and a great-granddaughter, Jordan Coker. He is survived by his wife Dorothy, children Ron (Barb), Debbie (Kevin), Glenn, and Sandy (Gary). He also leaves behind 27 grandchildren and 29 great-grandchildren
